First opened in 1905, the Academy of Music Theatre is an architectural and cultural icon of central Virginia. During its initial run, the Academy’s stage hosted countless renowned individuals — film industry pioneer Mary Pickford, international star and WWII spy Josephine Baker, and world-famous composer John Philip Sousa, to name a few.
Due to changing consumer tastes, the theatre closed in 1958, and sat dark for decades. After numerous brushes with demolition and years of determined effort to restore the languishing institution, the Academy reopened in 2018, 60 years after its closure. Now fully restored and modernized, the Academy has returned as Lynchburg’s “Jewel of Main Street.”
The model represents the front facade of the building in its restored state, and the model’s base displays the logo of the Academy’s parent arts organization — the Academy Center of the Arts — as well as the years of the theatre’s opening and re-opening in 1905 and 2018, respectively.
